The church was packed for the ordination of Beth Hewson to the diaconate last Saturday. ?It was a joyful celebration of God's call to Beth and?His hand in her life, which Christ Church has been privileged to witness since Beth and Tom came to the parish.

God willing The Right Reverend Dr Stephen Andrews, Tenth Bishop of the Diocese of Algoma, will ordain Dorothy Elizabeth (Beth) Hewson to the sacred order of Deacons on Saturday the 29th of November 2014, the Eve of St Andrew the Apostle, at Christ Church, North Bay (312 Greenwood Avenue), at 2 o?clock in the afternoon.? Your prayers and presence are requested.? Clergy and Lay Readers are invited to robe and process. The liturgical colour is red.

Beth is a graduate of Canadore College (Recreation Leadership), Laurentian University (B.A. Psychology), George Washington University (M.A. Education & Human Development), and Trinity College where she received her M.Div. this past spring.? She is currently a Chaplain at the North Bay and District Hospital. ?She is married to Tom Zink and they reside in North Bay.

 

Last evening, after a long illness, Rev'd Marie's mother Dorothy Quinn passed into God's nearer presence. Her passing was consistent with her life; quiet, faith- filled and gentle, surrounded by the love of her family in the home she cherished.

Dorothy Palmer, at the age of 83 years. Beloved wife of the late John "Jack" Quinn.
Loving mother of the Ven. Marie and her husband Robert Loewen, Marj and her husband Paul Daniels, Marion and the late Rev. Donald Mills, Marlene and her husband Reid Parr, and John and his wife Suzanne. Remembered with love by her 13 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Predeceased by her brother George Palmer and her sister Marjorie Crow.

What an eventful week! Christ Church wrapped up over 50 years of ministry at 890 Vimy St. with a service of Thanksgiving on the 7th. Our rector, Rev'd Marie had her collation as the Archdeacon of Temiskaming on the 13th. On the 14th we celebrated the first Eucharist at our new home at 312 Greenwood Avenue. Bishop Stephen, Dr. Jay, Mayor Al, and Pastor Tim were honoured guests. The renovations to the church continue behind the facade, but the worship space looks tremendous. Congratulations to the transition team, the many volunteers and the craftsmen for their work to situate us in such a functional space.

The Christ Church team, the Klondike bars, raised $2240 for the Gathering Place. ?Congratulations on braving the cold and helping people living in poverty in our region. ?North Bay raised $71,257 in total, 285% of the $25,000 goal.

Christ Church recently invited all the area Anglicans to dinner. The church hall was packed, the food was abundant and delicious, and the fellowship was palpable - especially during the singing!

The Rt. Rev'd Dr. Stephen Andrews presided at Confirmation on December 15. ?This is a culmination of regular classes planned by Beth Hewson. The worship service brought out the Advent themes of hope and joy.

The Youth group presented a humorous and poignant dramatic production on December 8. Thanks to Tammy Martel and Chris Wilson for their direction. As you can see, some of the less youthful were conscripted as well.

The youth group raised $3041 for World Vision by participating in the 30 hour famine. ?Thanks to the supporters for their generosity and the leaders and youth for their commitment.

What is Godly Play?

Godly Play is a creative and imaginative approach to faith formation that has its roots in the work of Maria Montessori.? It was created by Jerome Berryman, an Anglican priest, about 30 years ago and has been used and developed over time by people around the world as a way of both teaching and being with children.? Godly Play uses symbols, beautifully crafted materials, rituals, and silence as well as stories to convey biblical traditions and practices of the Christian church.

Godly Play recognizes that children already know and experience God but may not have the language or opportunity to talk about and explore their experiences, thoughts, questions, and feelings.? Godly Play provides children an occasion not just to learn about God?s love, but to discover God?s love in the midst of a supportive community and environment.? It helps children learn Bible stories and religious language and to use them to make meaning.

What will happen at the workshop?

• You will experience Godly Play stories and wondering questions.
• You will learn about the values inherent in Godly Play.
• You will discover how Godly Play is used with children.
• You will have the opportunity to work with the story materials and practice storytelling.

 

Who is leading the workshop?

Amy Crawford is accredited as a teacher and trainer of Godly Play.? She has been using Godly Play in church settings for 15 years.? Amy lives in Toronto and works as the Program Minister for Children, Young Teens, and Youth at the General Council Office of The United Church of Canada.
